A Big Win for Women’s Sports
Recently, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and his wife announced that they are investing in Angel City FC, a National Women’s Soccer League that started in 2022. It is based in Los Angeles, California, and has many high-profile investors. Tennis superstars such as Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka have invested, alongside NBA and NHL players, World Cup champions, and now, the Stafford family. Matthew and Kelly Stafford have four girls between the ages of 2 and 6. “Anything that comes financially from it is obviously just icing on the cake,” Matthew explains. “For us, it was to be part of a team run by a bunch of powerful, strong, smart women. Something that’s really fun for our family to be a part of.” The Stafford family is investing in the future of women in sports with the hope that their daughters and any young girls will be inspired by strong women out on the field and have opportunities that follow their passions.
This to me was a very interesting topic because I myself am a female athlete. I play basketball, volleyball, and golf, and they have all taught me very valuable lessons. One of the more interesting statistics I found in this LA Times article was from the Women’s Sports Foundation. It said that 96% of female executive-level managers played competitive sports while growing up. Maybe I or one of my teammates will become an Athlete Entrepreneur!
